Using the content

You may read, print and share pages for learning and teaching, and quote short passages with a link back to the page. Please do not copy the site in bulk, republish it, or pass it off as your own.

Where the words come from

Etymologies are checked against Wiktionary, used under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the Online Etymology Dictionary. Clues and origin notes are written for WordPith. Word origins are a field of live disagreement, and some of these are one reading among several. If you find something wrong, write to us and we will fix it.

Links and partners

The site links to Google Play and to other websites we do not control. If we add partner (affiliate) links, they will be labelled “Partner links”, and we may earn a commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you.

No warranty

The site is provided as it is, for general learning. It is not exam advice, and we are not liable for decisions made on the strength of it.
